The Lost Son Found
Swami Amritaswarupananda
Excerpted from his book " From Amma's Heart"
Dr. Jaggu is a resident of Amma's ashram in India. Recently, his
family gave him the money to travel with Amma to Europe. By the
time he got his visa cleared, it was late and Amma and her tour
group had already left India. However, we were all happy that Jaggu
was going to join us in Antwerp, Belgium.
It was Jaggu's first trip outside India. He had never traveled in
an airplane before. So, we made all arrangements to have him picked
up from the airport well in advance. Devotees waited outside the
airport with the car, but Jaggu didn't come out. The airport authorities
confirmed that a passenger named Jaggu was on the flight from London-Heathrow.
They said that he landed at the Brussels International Airport at
around 4:00pm. Four hours since the flight landed, yet there was
no information regarding Dr. Jaggu
With the help of airport workers, the local devotees elaborately
searched all over the airport. The airport paging system announced
Jaggu's name several times. There was absolutely no response, and
there was no sign of Jaggu anywhere.
Eventually, everyone was forced to believe that Dr. Jaggu had gotten
lost somewhere - either in the gigantic airport or in the city of
Brussels in a desperate attempt to somehow reach the program.
Meanwhile, Amma was blissfully practicing some new bhajans, calmly
sitting in the midst of the entire tour group. As everyone was feeling
a bit worried and anxious about Jaggu's unexpected disappearance,
I disclosed the news to Amma in the middle of the singing. I expected
to express an outpouring of motherly concern. But to my astonishment,
Amma turned around and simply said, " Come on, sing the next
song."
To me this was a positive sign. Seeing Amma remain as cool as a
cucumber. I told the devotees, " I think Jaggu is absolutely
safe, Amma is so calm. Had there been any problem, she definitely
would have been more concerned."
Just a few minutes later, Br. Dayamrita appeared and announced,
" Jaggu just showed up at the front gate." Almost simultaneously,
Dr. Jaggu walked in with a big smile on his small face.
However, as per the adventurous story narrated by Jaggu, he really
had gotten lost. He said, " When I got out of the airport,
there was nobody there. I didn't know what to do. Though I was a
little worried, I had strong faith that Amma would send someone
to save me from the totally unfamiliar situation. Fortunately, I
had the address of the program venue. One couple took pity on me
and helped me reach here."
Amma said, " Amma very well knew you were all right and would
find your way here. That is why Amma remained calm whey they told
her you were missing."
Later that evening, I asked Amma how she knew that Jaggu waws safe.
She said, " Amma simply knew."
"But how?" My curiosity was stirred.
Amma said, " Just as you see your own image in a mirror, Amma
could see him safe."
I asked, " Did you see Jaggu getting help or did you inspire
the couple to assist him?" Amma wouldn't say anything further
about it, though I made a couple of more attempts.
