Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.

Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger: M.A.Math places special emphasis on addressing the needs of India’s rural poor, tribal populations, and impoverished persons through youth and adult education, addiction recovery campaigns, literacy programs, on-site training in basic hygiene, and other opportunities.

Achieve universal primary education:Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling

Achieve universal primary education: M.A.Math has initiated a national network of Amrita Vidyalayams, or primary schools, throughout India, as well as the Amrita Niketan Orphanage in Kerala, which provides schooling for over 600 boys and girls at any one time. Non-formal primary education centers also exist in rural villages, allowing the tribal children to attend school; some of these students go on for further studies in the Amrita Sanskrit Higher Secondary School in Kollam, Kerala.

Promote gender equality and empower women: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015

Promote gender equality and empower women: M.A.Math takes great care to ensure that women are supported and empowered through equal education and training opportunities, pension programs, and no-cost, dowry-free marriages. Many women are beneficiaries of the Free Housing Project. As a result, some women launch cottage industries in their homes, thereby establishing their presence in the greater market economy.

Reduce child mortality / Improve maternal health:Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five

Reduce child mortality / Improve maternal health: The Amrita College of Medicine, recognized by the World Health Organization, teaches basic midwifery and first aid skills to qualified laypeople and tribal persons who then take those skills back to their communities. AIMS also offers an Obstetrics and Gynecology Department to serve the needs of high-risk mothers and babies. In the tribal areas, destitute women are taught family planning skills.

Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases:Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases: The AIDS Care Centre in Kerala provides residential care and hospice services to HIV/AIDS infected persons and the Department of Infectious Diseases at AIMS offers treatment for those suffering from a variety of infectious diseases. The developing Prostitute Upliftment Program also focuses on HIV-prevention for women and girls who are victims of commercial sex trafficking.

Ensure environmental sustainability:integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources.
Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water.
Achieve significant improvement in lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers, by 2020.

Ensure environmental sustainability: Environmentally sustainable practices are standard in all of M.A.Math’s buildings and institutions. An ongoing national reforestation campaign, in association with the Forest Department of Kerala, is also flourishing, along with a critical project for the sustainable development of tribal people.
