Experience with Amma
A brief excerpt from the book "Sacred Journey" - By Swamini
Krishnamritaprana
Even though it was clear to her that Amma was a Mahatma (a great
soul), she felt that even Amma was not able to overcome her terrible
depression. She felt doomed by her illness, like she was in a prison
with no way out.

Satsang of the Month
Congratulations to the Seattle satsang for their contribution to
society!
Current Projects:
1) Auction - Like
it does every year, the satsang just finished its (10th) Annual
Auction fundraiser on a successful note. Funds were being raised
to bring Amma once again to the Northwest Region to spread her message
of love and service through her incomparable example of self-sacrifice
and unconditional love. One of the greatest insights that this effort
gave, was that if we just spent a few minutes looking within and
around us, we would find surprisingly simple ways of being useful.
The satsang members asked themselves, "What can I contribute?"
and answered back with offers to bidders of simple acts such as
cooking and delivering a homemade meal, teaching a dance, housecleaning
or yard-work, in addition to professional services.
2) Mother's Kitchen - Dressed
in aprons with pictures of Amma, the volunteers serve individually
or collectively home cooked meals to 45 men and 45 women in two
separate shelters in downtown Seattle, on the second Sunday of each
month. From reactions such as "Oh, you don't have any meat?"
six months ago to "Wow, this vegetarian stuff is really good"
and "Can you tell me more about Mother's Kitchen/Amma?"
they have come a long way. Recently, we started providing them with
used clothing and cosmetic samples. They recognize and appreciate
these little acts as an extension of our love for them. They are
so appreciative that it sometimes brings tears to our hearts. But
we are probably the ones benefiting the most from this relationship.
These men and women teach us how much we take things in our lives
for granted - from little things like fresh (not powdered) milk
to having a roof above our heads.
3) Amrita Kudumbam
This is a recent initiative to spread the light of love and service
to our friends and families who are not necessarily familiar with
Amma. Satsang volunteers organize an evening of prayer and singing
of devotional songs, followed by dinner, in the homes of different
devotees who would like to invite their own friends outside of the
regular weekly Satsang. This is also done at the homes of friends
if they so desire. Volunteers provide altar set-up services and
sing with devotion in a sincere effort to uplift the hearts of all
the listeners. On two occasions in the last few months, the satsang
was asked by a deeply spiritual and humanitarian elderly Punjabi
gentleman who attends the Satsangs, to come and sing at his home.
Twenty to thirty of his family members hosted and provided the satsang
with a beautiful opportunity to share our love and sing prayers
for the benefit of the suffering humanity. It is our hope that we
can spread love and a sense of selfless service through our community
of friends, building little by little, growing pockets of love across
the globe.
4)
Other projects include Food
Lifeline - Many in the satsang volunteer two hours of their
time to participate in this organization's repackaging and distribution
of donated food to local food banks and homeless shelters. The Craft
Project - In an effort to contribute providing clothing and
community to those in need, the satsang volunteers make handmade
items (meditation pillows, Amma dolls, amulets, etc.) for Amma's
bookstore as well as hats, scarves and afghans for Seattle's homeless
and local Katrina victims who chose to relocate to the Seattle area.
Regional Craft Weekends periodically and ongoing crafting events
throughout the year are held. The Circle of
Love project - In times of distress, there is nothing more
soothing than hearing a kind word that gives us strength and support.
The satsang volunteers try to be aware of and alert to the emotional
well being of people in our Satsang by doing little things like
sending cards to people who are ill or have lost their dear ones.
Maintaining a strong healthy Satsang family is the key in the long
run to being able to serve society in the ambitious ways to which
we are committed.
Gems to Treasure
God in Person - By Tukaram
Tukaram was a great Indian saint who lived in the 17th century
He who identifies
With the battered and the beaten
Mark him as a saint
For God is with him
The good man's mind
Is soft outside
And soft inside
Say it's like butter
He holds
Every forsaken man
Close to his heart
he treats
a slave
as his own son
Says Tuka -
I won't be tired
To repeat again
Such a man
Is God
in person.
