Interfaith Award: On 2nd May 2006, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi
Devi (Amma) was presented with the Interfaith Center of New York’s
4th Annual James Parks Morton Interfaith Award. The Interfaith Center
of New York (ICNY) bestowed the award upon Amma for her outstanding
role as a spiritual leader and humanitarian, citing in specific
her organization’s massive relief work in the wake of the
2004 Asian tsunami. As part of the award ceremony, Amma delivered
an address on intra-religious understanding and collaboration. The
award ceremony took place at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan.
Since its inception in 1997, the Interfaith Award has been presented
to 11 individuals who the ICNY feels are doing exceptional work
in fostering peace and harmony between the diverse religions of
the world. These include 1989 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate His Holiness
the Dalai Lama, 1984 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Archbishop Desmond
Tutu, 2003 Nobel Prize Laureate Shirin Ebadi and U.S. President
Bill Clinton.
An excerpt from Amma's acceptance speech:
In reality, the principles of love, compassion
and unity are at the heart of all religious teachings.
Christianity
says," Love thy neighbor as thyself." Hinduism says, "
We should pray that others may have what we want for ourselves."
Islam says, " If your enemy's donkey falls ill, you must take
care of it." Judaism says, " Hating one's neighbor is
equal to hating one's self." Though expressed in different
ways, the principle conveyed here is the same. The import of all
these sayings is that; As the same Soul, or Atman, abides in all
things, we must see and serve all as One. - Amma
The award is named after the founder of the ICNY, the Very Reverend
James Parks Morton. Reverend Morton founded the ICNY after retiring
from his service as Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine,
the Seat of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, in 1997.
Following
a press conference, Amma, during a conversation with a group of
people expressed her deep appreciation for the founder of ICNY.
She said that he was able to perceive and establish an organization
like ICNY owing to his deep innate goodness.

Great Undertakings
A brief excerpt from the Immortal Bliss Magazine.
It all started in 1992. The intention was to start an engineering
college. In those days we had no more than a few acres of land in
Amritapuri, and the authorities required that we had over one hundred
acres of land to start an engineering college.
After three months of searching over more than twenty-two sites
I became desperate. The region (Coimbatore, Tamilnadu) was very
dry and there was a problem finding land with sufficient water.

Gems to Treasure
Excerpted from " Awaken Children series"
Love alone lends attraction and beauty to our actions.
No work is insignificant or meaningless. The amount of love, the
amount of heart which you pour into your work makes it significant
and beautiful.
Behind
all great and unforgettable events is the heart. Love and a selfless
attitude underlie all truly great deeds. Behind any good cause,
you will find somebody who has renounced everything and dedicated
his or her life to it.
Children,
you must do your work with sincerity. Whether you consider it significant
or insignificant, whether you like it or not, you should do your
work with interest and love. When you work in this way, when love
begins to flow into all that you do, you work becomes sadhana.
It becomes less and less difficult, until one day all physical and
mental exertion are gone. From then on, you will start working with
your whole heart. Love blooms within you and it will be reflected
in all that you do.
