As we step into 2007!

January 6, 2007

Amma is now touring in Southern India. On January 6 Amma sat for more than 21 hours at a stretch for darshan. Approximately 1,70,000 people came to see Amma.

In the beginning of the program M.A.Math granted life-time pensions to 500 more needy people as a part of the M.A.Math pension scheme. ( Amrita Nidhi scheme).

Further, M.A.Math distributed 50 more sewing machines to the unemployed. This one of those innumerable ongoing schemes of the M.A.Math.

The sewing machines were distributed by Mr. A.K. Balan, Minister for Electricity. He said, "Amma directed religion and faith in God to the field of service. Without encouraging blind superstition, Amma is teaching us to love one another. During the time of the tsunami, Amma gave a perfect example of service. In areas where the government has stepped back from the field of service, Amma has stepped in and brought solace to the people."

A brief rewind to see the progress of Tsunami relief work.

Today Tsunami is an old story. But the victims continue to battle and cope with the terrible losses they encountered. The M.A.Math continues to help them in the battle.

Inaugural function of Amrita Setu bridge.

In his speech, Amma's senior disciple Swami Amritaswarupananda explained how Amma had first told him that the Ashram should build an evacuation bridge after witnessing the confusion, over-crowded boats and the amount of time involved in two false "tsunami alerts."

"Amrita Setu is Amma's love in rock-solid form—a symbol of the compassion and selflessness she embodies" Swami said.

The President said that he understood Alappad's need for a bridge, as he had faced many cyclones growing up in Rameshwaram. He also said that it was essential for people living close to the sea to have a proper warning system with regard to severe weather conditions.

The President concluded by saying that he would take with him from Amritapuri the message of giving. "Give and go on giving," he said. "That is the message I get from Amritapuri. There is no greater message than Amma giving to all the people of this region, and Kerala, and India, and for the world."

On this same day Amma gave stipends to village ferrymen.
