Houston Center Adopts
Report from Houston
September 14, 2005
It is true that lives lost in Hurricane Katrina cannot be reclaimed,
but the pain of the living can certainly be allayed by the warmth
of helping hands.
As part of the M. A. Center's hurricane relief efforts, its Houston
affiliate has started actively working towards stabilizing many
displaced lives. They as a group have decided to adopt survivors
on a family-to-family plan.
Coordinated by Ilsa Bonham, the volunteers met with several evacuees
of Latin-American origin. Beyond providing medical attention &
housing some in their own homes, quick action also helped them provide
employment opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds. Examples
include finding teaching positions; in one specific case a young
man was connected to a Texas A&M professor and he is now exploring
the possibility of continuing his Psychology studies there.
What is their inspiration? One volunteer remarked, "It is an honor
to follow Amma's example of serving our fellow beings."
