Update from M.A. Center Affiliates
San Ramon
September 9, 2005
Many volunteers are pouring themselves into bringing relief to
Katrina survivors. Some glimpses are given below.
Michigan
The Amma Center of Michigan will be helping with Hurricane Katrina survivors being brought to Michigan. About 500 people have been flown in and Governor Granholm has said that Michigan will be willing to receive upto 10,000 people.
A multifamily benefit garage sale was conducted over the 4 day long
weekend and $2500 was raised for the cause. The garage sale will
continue over the next couple of weekends.
Ramada Inn, located on 9 mile and Greenfield in Southfield is
currently housing 150 of the hurricane survivors. 50 of them are
children. The Amma Center of Michigan has been contacted by the
administrators at the hotel with a list of current and immediate
needs. Project Night based in Ann Arbor will also be helping us
collect some of the items by donating blankets, stuffed animals,
books, and backpacks for some of the 50 children.
Some of the items immediately needed are toiletry items (laundry soap, feminine products, baby diapers, baby wipes), school supplies for children and individually wrapped snacks.
If you would like to help in the Ann Arbor region activities ,
please contact the Amma Center of Michigan at (734) 665-6488.
Madison
The Madison Affiliate Center has been helping with the Allied Drive site where apartments are being prepared for 20 families. All the apartments at Allied Drive were cleaned, painted and furnished. Buses with 20 families are expected to arrive today.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Affiliate Center has been assisting survivors at Camp Gruber
(a military camp where 2000 people were bussed from the superdome
in New Orleans).
The Center is collecting monetary donations, backpacks and items to stuff them with for children of all ages. Some other items that are being collected are clothing for adults and children, shoes/socks of all sizes, toys/books/games for children, and small comforting blankets for children and babies.
