Progress in Worst Hit Areas of Tamilnadu
Nagapattinam
March, 2006
Nagapattinam also called as Nagore Pattinacherry was one of the
worst hit areas in Tamilnadu by the Tsunami. It consists of four
hamlets -- Keele Pattinacherry, Mele Pattinacherry, Pandagasalai
and Railadi Puthutheru. M. A. Math is rebuilding homes in these
areas destroyed by the disaster. Altogether 1050 houses will be
built in these hamlets along with amenities like roads, community
halls, child care, rainwater-harvesting system, etc. M. A. Math
plans to complete these houses within six months. This will be the
largest village to be rebuilt by the M. A. Math in Tamil Nadu.
Construction
of tsunami houses in Akkarapettai are progressing.
Tsunami
houses are under construction in Pandakasalai.
Beyond
hundreds of local volunteers, a very dedicated team from Japan's
International Volunteer University Student Association (IVUSA) participated
in building tsunami-relief houses in the villages of Pandagasalai,
Akkarapettai and Mele Pattinacherry.
One
IVUSA student, 22-year-old Taka Aki, suffers from cerebral paralysis.
He is bound to a wheelchair and has very limited muscle control.
His desire to serve was so strong, that he decided to come nonetheless.
He has been painting houses and is an inspiration to everyone at
the construction site. Read
a more detailed account of his drive to serve.
