Circle of Love
In describing the nature of true
compassion, Amma once said - "Compassion is not something one
person has for another, but rather something that arises when one
begins to see all others as ones own self". As real
compassion develops within, the sense of 'other' begins to lessen.
When we cut our own finger, the first impulse we have is to rush
to heal it, because we see the finger as belonging to us, as part
of ourselves. Likewise, when we see others suffering, our first
impulse should be to rush to comfort and help them, seeing them
as belonging to us, as part of ourselves.
Amma's Circle of Love program is yet another one of her practical
examples of this universal compassion. Its whole purpose is to provide
a network of compassionate service between those devotees who are
in need of assistance and those who would like to help them. By
selflessly extending ourselves to those brothers and sisters in
need of a little loving support, we become more expansive, and grow
a little more towards that universal compassion that our beloved
Amma radiates so fully. To us it may mean only a little of our time
and effort; to someone else it could mean the world.
There are many reasons someone might require assistance, such as
illness, disability or family crisis. Devotees can help in many
ways, from lending a sympathetic ear and sharing some comforting
words, to assistance with daily needs such as cooking, running errands
or driving someone to a doctor's appointment. For someone who's
suffering, even an occasional phone call can be like sunshine breaking
through the storm clouds!
