Education for a living
INSTITUTE OF PEOPLES' EDUCATION - JAN SHIKSHAN SANSTHAN (JSS),
a job training program launched by the Government of India, is
run by the M.A. Math in Idukki, Kerala and Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu.
More
than 100 courses in occupations varying from candle making to computer
science are offered through this program. The M.A. Math also encourages
JSS beneficiaries to participate in their communities and offer
selfless service.
Learning to repair electrical
equipment
In a village called Nedumbakkam in southern India, the JSS volunteers
from the M.A.Math teach tribal women and also women from other
poor sections of the area to repair electrical home equipments
like
blenders etc. Men are also welcome to these training classes.
These
classes help the tribal and poor men and women to acquire a skill
to sustain themselves. Surprisingly in the rural areas, the well-to-do
families
have
blenders and grinders in their kitchens.
These women make house visits and offer electrical repair service
and maintenance for
a reasonable charge.
JSS
is thus increasingly improving the lives of many people, who are
now able to live comfortably with self-respect and self-confidence.
