The first day of the retreat at Detroit

Detroit, Michigan
November 26, 2004

Amma once again spoke to her children and reminded us of how important it was to cultivate attitudes of love, compassion and understanding in our relationships. As Swamiji was translating Amma's talk into English, he stopped at a part where Amma had said "My children". "Not my children," Swamiji clarified with a touch of humor - " ...Amma's children," he said.

In the laughter that followed, Amma turned around and looked at Swamiji... Everyone eagerly anticipated another one of Amma's famous reprimands and Swamiji's humorous reaction...but this time it was not to be. As he saw Amma turning around, Swamiji hurried to correct his translation ... but Amma stopped him. "That is a good attitude to have," She said approvingly. "It is good to consider the whole world as one's offspring. This attitude will awaken the motherhood that lies dormant within each one of us."

As the satsang ended, and the singers and musicians entered the stage for the evening bhajans, the hall fire alarm suddenly went on. But the reaction of the people in the hall was something to be seen... Not a single face looked worried - there was not any indication of panic anywhere...instead, everyone looked up at Amma to see Her reaction. It seemed like fear had no place in Amma's presence. Everyone seemed to emulate Amma's words, "Children, you should feel the peace of an infant laying on its mother...it rests completely secure in the warmth of the mother's bosom." Amma, sitting serenely on the stage, covered her mouth with both hands and giggled like a child... "Oh yes," thought everyone, "A false alarm..."

Later in the evening, a group of three friends went to Amma for darshan. These young adults had a very child-like attitude towards Amma. Amma too, played with them like a friend, talking and joking with them and eagerly waiting for their reactions and comments. One girl in the group pointed to her friend and said, "Amma, look at how he has come to see you - the shirt that he is wearing is so bright and flamboyant! Isn't it, Amma?" Amma said to the girl, "There is nothing wrong in his choice of clothes. Amma remembers the story of the Gopis and Krishna when she sees this. The Gopis of Brindavan used to dress in all their finery when they went to see Krishna. When people asked them why they dressed up just to see Krishna, they would reply, "Before a worship is performed, all the utensils needed for it should be thoroughly cleaned. When we go to see the Lord, we are indeed performing worship. That is why we clean and dress this body before we see Him."

Many more such incidents sparked the evening, some were talked about, others remained in hearts to be cherished silently for years to come. The evening bhajans were exhilarating and as the night drew on to early morning, Amma's compassion and love bathed Her children in a divine glow as She talked, consoled and touched the hearts of all, the warmth of her smile touching the coldest corners of the hall.
