Justin's Story
Dearborn, MI
November 27, 2005
The wheelchair was manoevered close to Amma. Justin, bound to that chair,
had been in a coma until eight months ago. But now he was conscious, and
was able to smile innocently at Amma from his seat. It moved us to see how
Amma responded to his smile with endearing repetitions of 'my son, my son'.
With some effort, he gave Amma a thumbs-up sign, and Amma in turn kissed
his thumb repeatedly, as if to affirm his success at coming a long way since
his coma.
"Justin is a very good boy!" Amma beamed. Justin father then asked Justin
to say the peace prayer for Amma to hear.
"Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu", Justin managed to say slowly, Amma all
the while mouthing each syllable slowly to help him along. With the
successful utterance of the prayer, Justin too smiled brightly at Amma while
Amma stood up to gather him in her arms. Her eyes filled with tears as she
held him close.
We felt a sense of relief that Justin had found hope. He had found his
mother in Amma to care for him forever.
