"Look Within" my child...

June 16, 2004
San Ramon, California

The morning darshan had started and Amma was answering questions as she gave her blessing to many newcomers. All of a sudden, the line seemed to fall out and Amma noticed this. One of the line monitors was gazing at Amma and in his focus, had let the line move in a haphazard manner. Amma laughingly remarked, "Son, you seem to be sitting like a mile-stone just to mark the spot."

The youngster smiled, straightened his stance and sat up. In a few minutes Amma looked at him again. "You are simply sitting there - be more aware," Amma told him. Amma often says that to be externally alert and to do your job well, a certain amount of internal awareness is essential.

However in this man's case, it seemed like Amma was referring to his individual circumstances. This man had been having trouble with his meditation of late. Not knowing how to explain the confusion and the anger that he seemed to have developed recently, he had been silently asking for Amma's understanding and help.

The youngster sat contemplating Amma's words as he now helped actively with the line.

Then, most lovingly, Amma added, "As a witness you have been looking outside, now look within."

The young man was struck and moved by Amma's final words of advice. He now realized that Amma had understood his particular situation perfectly and had been advising him on his mental state all along - this was Amma's answer to his cry for help!

He now saw his situation and its answer with perfect clarity. "As Amma said, I have been involved in my actions, reactions and emotions with no awareness. Now I will have to look inside myself as a witness," he said contemplatively. "Amma is asking me to act with increased awareness and learn to respond with discrimination rather than react arbitrarily!"

It is always amazing to see how much Amma packs into a few words, a look, a smile - No matter how little the communication, through it she addresses every individual problem and solves them. This is even more evident in India where the crowds who come to see her run into tens of thousands and Amma's hugging darshan lasts for hardly a few seconds. But no matter how short the darshan is, Amma knows, understands and deeply sympathizes with her children's troubles, be they physical, mental or spiritual, and many trying situations seem to resolve themselves spontaneously with her Grace.
