Boston Honors Amma...

July 21, 2005
Boston

Amma's program in the Boston area began today. The program was inaugurated by Mayor Dennis Hunt, mayor of the city of Marlborough. With the mayor were Susanne Morreale-Leebar, President and CEO of the Marlborough Center of Commerce. Mayor Dennis Hunt is recognized as a strong advocate for the needy in the Marlborough community. In his address, the mayor expressed his whole-hearted support of Amma, and her spiritual and humanitarian contribution toward the global society.

In his address the Mayor spoke about Amma, “She is an example to all of us and I commend Amma for her tireless efforts to serve others and to reveal to each of us a higher purpose in life – that of compassionate service to those in need – across the globe. Although I know there is an enormous volunteer organization behind her, I find it amazing to see the power of what one person can visualize and accomplish. She has shown us, and continues to demonstrate that true service to humanity is possible and is also our true purpose.” He then presented Amma with a Certificate of Recognition for her service, from the City of Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Susanne Morreale-Leebar, President and CEO of the Marlborough Center of Commerce also spoke on this occasion. “I thank Amma for her wonderful energy this morning and for sharing her life with us today,” she said. “I wish the greatest of success with this program and I know that many will be enlightened, motivated to serve others and spiritually awakened because of Amma’s generous energy and unique gifts. And I know that each of you will be prepared to accomplish more in servitude to others as a result of Amma’s program this week.”

The morning program offered an unexpected auditory treat - in the person of famed violinist, Sri Lalgudi Krishnan who happened to be in the vicinity and was delighted to attend Amma’s program. Son of famous violinist Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Lalgudi Krishnan, who leaves for India tonight, said, “I am fortunate to be able to play for Amma on my last day here; especially so because it is Guru Poornima today!” Accompanying him on the tabla was Sri Aditya Kalyanpur. Krishnan’s long stint on the violin soothed and moved the audience with its melodious devotion. Apart from Carnatic classical pieces, he also played two of Amma’s bhajans, “Agathanai, Agathani Vishnu Devan” and “Vedambike”.

Many other public figures had also gathered to welcome Amma to the Boston area. Lidia Adams, President and CEO of Quality Theroforming, Dr. Sudarshan Chatterjee, cardiologist and founder of North Andover Medical Associates, Lisa Piehler, Executive Director of the American Red Cross in Central Massachusetts and Baltej Maini, President and CEO of Fallon Clinic, the largest multi-specialty private group medical practice in Central Massachusetts were some among them.

Amma, remained in all humility, even as the dignitaries showered her with praises for her unparalleled humanitarian activities and her compassion for the suffering people.
