Amma often says, “Meditation is as precious as gold. Not a single moment spent in meditation is wasted.” Hundreds of people have now experienced the Amrita Silent Meditation Retreats and having learned how to cultivate the art of taking refuge in the Self, their lives have been profoundly transformed. The retreats are suitable for beginners to meditation and yoga but also help to reinforce and strengthen existing spiritual practices, providing a solid foundation for a lifetime of practice.

Amma’s teachings on loving awareness provide the basis of all retreats; we learn to sit with awareness, walk with awareness, perform every yoga asana with awareness and how to eat with awareness. Living with awareness leads to understanding and love. When we understand and love ourselves, we are better able to understand and love others. The foundation of the Silent Meditation Retreats is each participant’s commitment to the practice of silence. A personal vow of silence is the starting point.

Why silence? Normally our attention is flowing outwards, pulled towards objects, people and the situations of life. We are usually ‘being with’ something or someone. By practicing silence, we shift the direction of this flow inwards to experience the power of our very own ‘being’. It is a joyful, energizing and deeply transformative experience. We live in a world of turbulence and turmoil, constantly bombarded by the chatter of our gadgets and minds. Understanding our need to shut out this noise and experience the deep inner peace and joy that is our true nature, Amma has urged her disciples in the North America to conduct extended silent meditation retreats.

Amma Center of New Mexico is offering a weeklong Silent Retreat  Immersion from Friday, August 23, 2019 to Friday, August 30, 2019. Amma’s North American based disciples, Br. Dayamrita Chaitanya and Bri. Rema Devi will lead the retreat.

Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to participate. Attendance is required on all registered days from start of the event to the finish. No partial days are allowed. There is also an option to attend the first three and ½ days of the retreat for those that cannot attend the full retreat. This short option ends on Monday, August 26 at 8:00 pm.


7 Day Silent Retreat (August 23 - 30):
Onsite (dorm style accommodations) = $365. Offsite = $260

3.5 Day Silent Retreat (August 23 - 26):
Onsite (dorm style accommodations) = $190. Offsite = $150

Fee includes three delicious, gluten free, vegetarian meals and refreshments each day.


On site accommodations are dormitory style with separate rooms for men and women at the Santa Fe ashram. Couples cannot be accommodated together. On-site accommodation is initially limited to those from outside the Santa Fe metropolitan area, but may become available later.

Retreat Details:
This course reinforces existing spiritual practices and provides the foundation for a lifetime of meditation practice. Connecting with this sacred and ancient wisdom within ourselves brings meaning to life. Benefits include clarity and strength of mind to achieve your goals, staying centered in an ever-changing world and overcoming stress and tension. Amma’s simple technique of breath awareness infused with the MA OM mantras and open observation makes this retreat suitable for all levels of experience in meditation from beginner to advanced. Meditation format alternates between sitting and walking sessions.

This retreat will also include morning Archana, IAM-35, Amrita Yoga, nature walks, seva (selfless service), satsang and question and answer sessions with Amma's senior disciples, and devotional singing. Typical daily schedule is from 5.30 am to 8.30 pm.


Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Anyone who is 18 year or older can attend.

What about on site and off site accommodations?
On site accommodations simple, dormitory style sleeping pads on the floor. Women and men will have separate rooms, so couples cannot be accommodated together. On-site accommodation is initially limited to those from outside the Santa Fe metropolitan area, but may become available later is there is room.

Registration payments will be accepted at the beginning of the retreat in the form of a check or credit card.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferable?

What are some important rules/guidelines to adhere to at the event?

  • Retreatants must commit themselves to silence for the duration of the retreat, and promise they will respect others’ vow of silence, which includes behaving in ways that do not lure them into breaking their vow.
  • The vow of silence includes refraining from the use of electronic communications such as on cell phones, computers, iPads, etc.
  • Retreatants who are not stying oniste are asked to maintain silence when they are not physically present at the retreat,
  • Other than the few optional sessions, retreatants must participate in all sessions, unless they are physically unwell.
  • Retreatants who have not taken IAM previously are asked to attend a free, mini IAM class before the retreat at the Amma Center of NM at 2:00PM on Friday August 23, 2019.

What can I bring into the event?
Clothing for both warm weather and cool weather, good walking shoes, yoga props, asanas, and yoga blankets, flashlight, water bottle, umbrella/rain coat, medication/supplements (if you need them), note book/pens for journaling, and snacks (if you have special dietary needs)
